As one of the state’s most prolific artistic resources, the exhibit shouldn’t be missed during its run through Oct. 23 at the museum, located on the St. Gregory’s University campus in Shawnee.
Mike's Electricity Fundamentals
There are numerous books written by more intelligent men than Mike on the subject of electricity, however in 2006 he prepared some information about the subject to share a website with his brother, an educator and notable artist, the idea was to share with young persons a basic understanding of electricity and electrical safety. Mike believes that everyone needs some knowledge about household electricity for their own personal safety. Electricity is very useful when kept under control but inherently dangerous too. Understanding natures electricity and how to use it was a noble challenge for many of our forefathers. The fundamental knowledge they uncovered helped them in their day but not nearly as much as the expansion of that knowledge has done for us living today. We tend to take it for granted that lamps illuminate the night or that heating and airconditioning for our comfort in the home is just part of the house.
A continued pursuit of this subject requires a strong desire to learn, and the persistance to read and remember a lot of unfamiliar terms. A subject like "electricity" requires a persistant attitude because there is no plot to keep your interest as in a novel. Mike researched information about some notable electrical pioneers that earned their fame through discovery of the fundamental principles. Mike believes that it will be easier to learn about electricity if you understand where these terms originated. Also, one can appreciate the efforts of these pioneers for their scientific contributions to society.
Caricature sketches of the electrical pioneers referenced in this presentation were drawn by Mike's brother, Patrick Riley.
